In 1997 I decided to establish a sculpture school in Jerusalem that was able to facilitate and encourage an approach and respect for Sculpture that would inspire and be supported by the very best of facilities, equipment, materials and atmosphere.

create – A - space originally existed as a multi-disciplinary art project in London, formed in 1979, with the photographer Harry Scott and situated in a disused factory alongside Blackfriars power station (currently Tate Modern), the philosophy of a dogma-free, dynamic and contemporary art centre, despite the geographical re-location remains intact.

The 160 sq.mtr studio in Talpiot is a shared space. The sharing of my studio with my students creates; besides an encyclopaedic resource centre, an atmosphere of mutual inspiration, activity and creativity, it illustrates the potentiality to have a life of an Artist, it enriches and inspires the work of the students, and underlines the dedication required for the most demanding of the Art disciplines.

The insistence to excellence, the use and ready availability of the correct tools and an in-depth knowledge, via comprehensive slide-lectures of the History of Sculpture has been established and maintained. The development and understanding of Idea and Content is rigorously pursued. To encourage the understanding of technique, perseverance and vigorous inquiry, to construct a 3-dimensional approach to sculpture- to achieve the very best is the basic goal of create-A-space.

I am fortunate to have a body of students that motivate me, they come to the studio, eager in their demand to be creative no matter what the situation; they arrive often shaken by terrorism and distracted by life- within moments the studio resonates with creativity, each and every student questioning and delving deeper; carving, modelling, welding- working with passion, courage, commitment and purpose.

The diversity of the work is testament to the diversity of the students, regardless of age, occupation or background, because of the very human nature of the studio, variety is demanded. I revel in this non-uniformity, encouraging and coaxing the very best, it is a true testament to both the students and the richness and potential of Sculpture.

Sculpture demands of the maker a complete experience, an experience that encourages thought, consideration, an elevation of time and change. Sculpture exists as a record of change- to change lifeless stone to a shining, lyrical emblem; to change mud to eloquent form, colourless cement to a richly patinated surface, waste steel to defiant space. It requires a learning process where the creator is constantly aware of possibility, no less of the material but of the artist himself; it is through this active stance that change, be it of position, relationship, placement or belief becomes real.

I am privileged to be in the position I am- I have witnessed, assisted and occasionally insisted that change occurs. To change the industrial backdrop of Talpiot to a power-house of creativity and beauty. To change by example, to allow that Art can exist and flourish. I insist that whatever the project the goal of Sculpture is attained, to take part in the process of elevating the prosaic to the profound is a thrilling process, to surprise and inspire is to participate in the making of Art.

To facilitate the activity, to offer a series of extraordinary opportunities- a portrait, a nude study, a rock, a bucket of clay, a book, a slide-lecture, a bag of plaster, a wood-stove, a Mozart opera, a Jimi Hendrix rift, create-A-space is a privilege I experience 4 times a week.
